Find a Tuner

Memo from The President

Official Palm Tree of the Los Angeles Chapter

First grade is almost over and my little girl will soon be busy with summer adventures, which is another way of saying “summer school”. Far from the “lazy days” of summer, she’ll be busy learning about:

THE MAGIC OF NUMBERS
What is the greatest number discovered? Do you know the trick with 9’s? What is the twelfth root of two? Challenge yourself with tricks & puzzles and improve math and thinking skills.

EVERYDAY PHYSICS
Do you ever wonder what keeps an airplane in the air? Why a piano goes out of tune? Develop your scientific skills by creating gadgets and performing amazing experiments.

C.L.A.W. ART
How does a komodo dragon catch its food? How tall is a giraffe piano? Carnivores Living Around the World takes you on a global safari, where you’ll explore the world of large carnivores while expressing yourself through art.

Wow! No wonder kids are smarter today. On top of these interesting classes, she’ll go swimming, hunt for bugs, make music, build sand castles on the beach, eat lots of barbeque, take lazy naps (with her exhausted parents) and hopefully, have a great summer.

Her busy summer schedule not only inspires me to keep my mind sharp, my body active and my business busy (to help pay for all her activities!) but she also reminds me to take time to play, too.

The 52nd ANNUAL PTG CONVENTION AND TECHNICAL INSTITUTE is in Grand Rapids, July 15-19, 2009. But fear not! We’ll have several great programs right here in Los Angeles for those who are staying close to home. Come and join us and who knows, maybe we’ll have a barbeque, too.

Have a great summer!

Chapter Meetings : Third Monday of every month.
NEXT MEETING: June 15, 2009 at 7:00 PM

For June, Don Mannino will be giving his program titled, “Octaves and Unisons Fundamentally Explained.” It is an extension of his program, “The Fundamentals of Tuning,” in which Don will discuss the many ways we can set octaves in our tunings. The class will include a demonstration of some of the problems faced when tuning unisons and how to get through them. He will also demonstrate how to listen to the precise partial we want to hear in octave tuning, as well as how to decide if a particular octave width is appropriate and musical. The goal of these methods is to leave a clean and musical tuning. This class will be useful to both the electronic and aural tuners in the audience and is especially geared to associates working on their tuning skills. Be assured that the material contained in this program will be interesting to all in attendance.

Pierre's Fine Pianos, Los Angeles
Richard Davenport
Richard Davenport

Last month we met at Pierre’s Fine Pianos, where Richard Davenport presented his program “Basic Grand Action Geometry”. This was a serious class on action and friction ratio’s. In an in depth examination of the lever arrays that make up a piano action, we were introduced to the path energy actually takes from the time it leaves your fingertip to the time the hammer strikes the string. Troubleshooting tips helped us understand just how valuable this level of regulation can be in improving performance.

Our thanks to Pierre Julia for staying late and welcoming us into his store. This well attended meeting included several new members as well as a physics major from UCLA and several music majors from Cal Arts participating in a work study program. Thanks to Mike Kemper and Alan Eder for bringing them along.

Your chapter strives to meet the challenge of boosting attendance through informative, interesting chapter meetings and always looks to you for any input you may have. Help us to continue being a strong chapter in the Southern California region.

Thank you.
